Abacus Home Loans, understands that your details provided to us, are private and personal. How we collect, utilise, keep, exchange and protect your information is important. You must be allowed to feel secure when we deal with each other. We need to explain how we protect your privacy, how we use your information, who we may share it with and other circumstances that apply to such personal information. This Privacy Policy sets out how we deal with your information. We are bound by the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) for the management of personal information.

The information itself.

We collect information. Personal information is pertinent detail gained, for the ability of trained credit assessors, to be able to assess a loan application. The information is enough to  identify person or persons, whether the information or assessment is true or not, and the manner in which the information or an opinion is collected . This detail includes, but is not limited to, identity and contact details, marital status, residential address, assets & liabilities, income – expenses and other appropriate information.

Private information regarding you’re health may need to be collected. This will impact a variety of insurances (e.g. mortgage insurance) involved in servicing your best interests as a duty. We need your consent to acquire sensitive information.

Method of Collection of the Information.

Abacus Home Loans requires you to provide the information. We will usually check the credit and other information you supply with another organisation who hold financial data.  This could  involve a request for a credit report from a credit reporting agency, when you apply for credit. We will let you know about the type of organisation prior to collecting that report. It may occur that third parties may collect your information on our behalf, as long as you are still providing that information.

Why is it necessary to collect your information?

Abacus Home Loans collect, collate, store and use your information in order to:

Submit your application for a credit assessment to a suitable credit facility and provide you with information about related insurance products;

  • Identify and tell you (with your consent) about other products or services offered by us or a third party that may be interesting and we may direct market you with this news.
  • Secure you in our data base and provide you with any necessary financial management.
  • Abacus Home Loans may use some or all of the information for internal analytical purposes.
  • We may have to meet legal & regulatory obligations.
  • Include your detail in a marketing programme – unless you opt out.
  • Testing of our IT systems.
  • Enable the appropriate website security when visiting our sites.

We may use the information about you, to provide you with specific communications about products and services we think will benefit or be of interest. Who & Why we share information

Abacus Home Loans provide for its clients by the provision of product & service options of options in your interest. We may partner with another organisation(s) to support the products and services we offer (for example, insurance partners). In these situations we will provide our partners with the personal information you have given us.

There may be a legal compulsion to disclose your personal information to various authorities. This includes the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act to disclose details of financial transactions, or we may also be compelled under tax laws to provide such information to regulators.

Other organisations which we may exchange your personal information with may include:

  • Credit reporting bodies;
  • Government and law enforcement agencies;
  • Our suppliers, associates, service providers or contractors (including, for example, call centre, stationery printing houses, mail houses, information technology, marketing agencies, and marketing research companies etc);


Any person who proposes to guarantee or has guaranteed repayment of any credit provided to you;

  • Mortgage insurers, brokers, originators and/or managers, financial consultants, accountants, lawyers or real estate agents;
  • Third parties to enable them to contact you to offer their products and services or to determine if you would be interested in the products and services; and


Any person considering acquiring or taking an interest in our business.


Abacus Home Loans aims to provide you with a material benefit in its marketing campaigns. We only disclose any of your personal information to any other organisation, if we take reasonable steps to ensure that:

The organisation has the same commitment as us to the protection of your personal information; AND

You have consented to us doing so.

By consent, we mean approval in writing, orally, or implied from your dealings with us.

Transfer of personal information overseas.

We may hold or process your information on servers located overseas for filtering, hosting or storage purposes, reporting and analytical purposes and for system development testing purposes. If we do this, we make sure that such organisations have the appropriate data handling and security arrangements in place to ensure compliance with this Privacy Policy. Accuracy of the information

It is important for us, and for you, that the information we hold is accurate and up to date. In this, we rely on you to help us. We ask that you contact us whenever there are any changes to your personal information, so that we can update our records.

The personal information we hold about you is yours to access and correct, and as such we can provide you with general information, such as your name, address and contact details quite easily. There is no fee for making the initial request. More detailed information may not be as easy for us to access, and if necessary, in some cases there may be an access charge to cover the time we spend locating, compiling and explaining the requested information . If there is an access charge, we’ll give you an estimate up front and confirm that you’d like us to proceed. Generally, the access charge is based on an hourly rate plus any photocopying costs or other out-of-pocket expenses. You’ll need to make the payment before we start.


The process of providing you with access to or correcting your personal information may take up to 30 calendar days from the date of your request. If we refuse to give you access to or correct your information, we must give you written notice setting out the reasons for the refusal and the mechanisms available for you to complain about the refusal.
